One of the highest maintained trails in the Canadian Rockies. Sentinel Pass offers a breathtaking (literally) perspective from 2,611 m, looking down into both Larch Valley and Paradise Valley.

The Route Experience

An extension of the Larch Valley trail. From Minnestimma Lakes, the trail switchbacks steeply up a scree slope to the pass. It is physically demanding but technically straightforward.

  • The Pass: The summit of the pass is narrow and rocky, offering views of the "Grand Sentinel" rock pinnacle.
  • Mount Temple: You are standing at the base of the massive Mount Temple, the highest peak in the area.

Safety & Warnings

  • Lightning: This is a high-strike zone. If you see anvil-shaped clouds or hear thunder, descend immediately.
  • Scree: The trail is composed of loose rock. Trekking poles are highly recommended for the descent to prevent slips.

Photography Tips

  • The Switchbacks: Looking down from the pass at the zig-zagging trail below provides a great sense of scale.
  • Paradise Valley: Capture the view north into the rugged and remote Paradise Valley.
