Men's Olympic Downhill
The Men’s World Cup Downhill (Run #1); the first stop on the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup circuit and the only Canadian venue for speed events. The “Olympic” name reflects its design for failed 1964 and 1968 Winter Games bids; Willy Schaeffler planned the lines in the early 1960s. The course follows the southwest face of Mount Whitehorn: Lone Pine and Tickety Chutes for momentum, Upper Wiwaxy for gliding, Coaches’ Corner for the critical turn, “The Fall Away” (a cambered section at 120 km/h), Double Trouble (twin steep pitches), and the Waterfall into the Timing Flat. Start 2,507 m; finish 1,680 m. The lower portion, the Race Pitch, terminates near the base lodge. See Lake Louise Run Names for full history.
