Princess Louise

Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848–1939), the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She was married to the Marquess of Lorne, who served as Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. During that time, she travelled across Canada and took an interest in the Rockies.

Lake Louise was named in her honour (originally “Emerald Lake,” it was renamed Lake Louise in 1884). The province of Alberta is also named for her; she was Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. Her connection to Canada is remembered in place names throughout the west, including Louise Creek a town called Caroline (AB), and the lake itself.
