Mount Whyte

A peak northwest of Mount Fairview, overlooking Lake Agnes. Mount Whyte (2,983 m) is classified as a “difficult scramble” or “very hard”; characterized by high exposure and loose rock.

Route. The standard route from the Niblock–Whyte col involves a technical “chimney” section and significant route-finding. Never attempt in snowy conditions; fall distance is considerable and potentially fatal. The Perren Route (II 5.6) provides an alternative for rock climbers but remains plagued by loose rock.

Geology. Named for the Mount Whyte Formation (Middle Cambrian); transitional limestone and shale. Rockfall is a leading cause of accidents; helmets mandatory. Rockfall often triggered by parties above; communicate with groups below.

Relation. Mount Whyte and Mount Niblock are twin peaks; Whyte is the higher and more technical. Both are accessed via Lake Agnes.
