Little Beehive

Lake Louise Lakeshore

A smaller summit above Lake Agnes, reached by a short trail from the Lake Agnes Tea House. The Little Beehive (2,195 m) offers panoramic views of Lake Louise, the Bow Valley, the Slate Range, and Mount Temple. The hike gains approx. 45 m from Lake Agnes and takes roughly 45 minutes.

Geology. Like the Big Beehive, the Little Beehive is Cambrian St. Piran Formation quartzite; a roche moutonnée shaped by the Victoria Glacier. The two peaks bracket the hanging valley that holds Lake Agnes, a secondary glacial valley carved by a smaller glacier that could not erode as deeply as the main Lake Louise trunk glacier.

Naming. J. Willoughby Astley named both Beehives in 1890 for their resemblance to European straw beehives (skeps). The Little Beehive is often combined with the Lake Agnes hike as a logical extension; it is favoured for its slightly easier ascent and expansive views. The full Beehive Circuit via the Highline Trail to the Plain of Six Glaciers is 12–20 km and strenuous. See the Little Beehive Trail for a full hiking guide including logistics, fire lookout history, and photography tips.
