Caribou Conservation Breeding Centre
Near Athabasca Falls, Jasper National Park
Parks Canada’s first-of-its-kind facility to rebuild Southern Mountain Caribou herds through captive breeding and yearling release. Located in wilderness near Athabasca Falls, ~35 km south of Jasper in Jasper National Park.
The $40 million facility spans 65 hectares with 35 interconnected pens designed to minimize human-caribou interaction. First wild caribou were captured in March 2025 (10 animals, 7 pregnant females); first calves born June 2025. Long-term goal: release 26–34 calves annually once the breeding herd reaches 40 reproductive females; target Tonquin herd size 200 by 2036.
